Matt: That is because I have a much better memory than you. Alex: Really.
5 minutes of other banter and eating yummy thai food occurs and then Alex suddenly gazes at Matt adoringly
Matt: What? Alex: I just realized....we're sitting in the same booth we were on our very first date 3 years ago. Matt: Awww. That's sweet, but we were further back in a different booth. Alex: (seemingly surprised) Really?
Alex digs out iphone, finds the original photo he snapped of Matt sitting in that particular booth the night of their first date
Alex: See? We were sitting right here. Same sides of the booth even. Matt: Huh. You're right. It was this booth.
Later in the car on the way home
Matt: It suddenly occurs to me. You didn't actually deliberately use memories of our first date just to prove a point about you having a better memory, did you? Alex: I win......and I did it romantically! Matt: This is so going in livejournal. |

| Old friends |
[Dec. 9th, 2009|02:50 pm] |
A client's mother (late) had a fabulously immaculate 76 Peugeot 504 diesel sedan that I very much coveted. The engine timbre sounds like a quiet recording of a very large truck. Shortly before she got seriously ill, they sold it and bought her a late model Nissan Altima (nice car) and some 30-something couple bought the car to run a bio-diesel in it. They must live nearby, cause sitting and knitting at the coffeeshop, I looked up to see that the car had been parked just outside the door. If the window wasn't there, I could toss my baseball cap and have it land on "my old friend".
How cheerful. |

It's below 20 f and I've given myself permission to stay indoors and do commissioned knitting all day: Baby blanket, mittens, and a X-mas stocking. I should have the blanket and the mittens done today. no problem. I'll get the pattern for the stocking designed, and then it will be easy peasy.
Thank goodness for MADSKILLS! I GOT EM!
I sat down and figured out that if my work shedule is full, I can just about make rent in a week of fiber work work. That's pretty cool.
Anyone who was serious about having me do something for them, would you please send me a private message so we can talk and get something scheduled? Thx!
i delivered the monsterous red aran sweater (not that it was so big, it was just a monster to fix). The client was THRILLED with the end result. Booyah!~ |

There are definitely some games around my house that can be donated! Being stuck in a hospital is AWFUL. |

| Pale Shelter - 342/365 |
[Dec. 9th, 2009|06:19 am] |
Work went fairly smoothly yesterday. The topic of the day, of course, was the snow moving into the area. All of the folks that commute to the Twin Cities from warmer climes (to include San Francisco, Houston, Bangalore...) were wondering how they would fare trying to drive in this stuff. When i left at 7:20pm, there was more on the ground than there appeared from the 6th floor and the wind meant that the parking garage (AKA "ramp"...it's a Minnesota thing, apparently) was pale shelter as the snow came right in. But the drive home wasn't much worse than usual as most folks had gone home long ago. And apparently, yes, i am that good as a friend braved the snow to come pay me a visit. And yes, i definitely made it worth the trip. i am a gracious host, after all.
OH! And bearpawly has declared next Tuesday, DEC 15, to be our annual LJ-Santa Hat Day! WOOF!! |

| Mono to Stereo |
[Dec. 9th, 2009|03:34 am] |
My all time favorite Christmas song from any artist, decade or style. This version was released in mono in 1963, but re- released, again in mono, then in sort of stereo, and then in better stereo using the original studio tapes. I remember first hearing it in 1963 on the car radio in our family station wagon. As I was in the third grade at the time, there was no way I could convince my parents to find the record for me. Years later when it came out again, I got it, and every version since. The Ronettes, "Sleigh Ride", headphonalicious...stereo.

| 29 YEARS AGO TODAY |
[Dec. 8th, 2009|08:30 am] |
John Lennon died when I was ten. My parents were adults themselves by the time the Beatles got huge, so they didn't really have anything more than a passing affinity for them while I was growing up. So, I had no real context of who the band was or why people were freaking out, beyond knowing a few of the more signature songs, and knowing they came roughly "from the 60s".
Growing up in LA in the 80s meant you were either a KMET/KLOS listener (classic rock), or KROQ listener (alternative/punk/new wave). I chose the latter, which made it de rigeur to vocally dismiss The Beatles.
It wasn't until later in life that I started to discover how many of the bands I loved -- ELO, Jellyfish, Fountains of Wayne, Nirvana, Keane, Muse -- had a similar sensibility and pop/rock lineage as The Beatles. Since then, I have have explored most of the Fab Four's catalog and found my own adult opinion of them. I'm hardly a fanatic, but they're certainly a band I admire and enjoy.
However, I tell this story because, when I tell Beatles fans this history of mine, they totally get hung up on the first part -- "How could you not like them!?!?!?"
Me: "But I just told you, I discovered them later in life."
Them: "BUT... HOW COULD YOU NOT LIKE THEM?!?!"
Sigh.

I am more than moderately bummed out that they chose to drop Apukad Eros Kezen and the Hungarian Prayer from the newest version of Chess.
The ending (I felt) was a complete train wreck but I think that's because it was simply a concert version.
I thought the primes were good but Idina .. honey.. I love you but you really do yell a lot of your notes. |
